Global Experience
Global Learning Courses
One of the greatest vehicles for global awareness has come from my time in global learning courses at FIU. From Honors College courses centered around global climate change and pandemics, to Foundations courses tackling myth, mysticism, rituals, and how they manifest in today's world. My time in such courses has shown me to think beyond the classroom and local area. These classes have taught me how to take my goals and weave them into the fabric of the global perspective.
Paper Airplanes
English Tutor
During my months as an English Tutor for Paper Airplanes, I have learned not only how different life is for young adults around the world, but also, how similar. As a tutor, I assist a conflict-affected young adult in mastering English to increase his access to future opportunities. I do this by adapting a guided curriculum to cater to his individual strength and weakness areas. I have also had the privilege of serving as his mentor in professional and personal goal setting. As a result, I have aided cheered my student on through many miles
Research
Chambers Lab
In the Chambers Lab, I spent two years working on a variety of projects ranging from Parkinson’s to Glioblastoma, with the ultimate goal being drug discovery and identification of signaling mechanisms. Although my main role involved optimizing experiments, culturing cells, and collecting protein samples, I most enjoyed the data interpretation process. I loved using my background knowledge to put the puzzle pieces together, which not only reinforced what I knew, but helped me turn connections into a bigger picture. Furthermore, planning the next experimental steps based off what I learned forced me to understand how rigorous good science needed to be. This gave me a newfound appreciation for not only the biological sciences but the investigative process. The work being done here is relevant to people all over the world because illness is universal.
